Delicious-sweet Manuka honey – the liquid gold for the living and the dead: what at first glance makes a rather bizarre appearance is quite understandable on closer inspection. For example, scientific evidence shows that humans used honey in ancient times to embed their dead. The conservation effect of this natural product was already known thousands of years ago. And in many cultures, this property is still being exploited. Freely following the motto: “The best comes to the end…” Manuka honey, however, can do much more. So surely no one has to wait until his death to enjoy this New Zealand honey. It has always been regarded as a highly efficient wound healing agent, which, thanks to special enzymes, can quench bleeding, inhibit inflammation, kill bacteria, disinfect – and infinitely more.
What is Manuka Honey?
The healing effect of honey has long since ceased to be an insider’s tip. The name Manuka Honey comes from the fact that every honey variety, which was put together by a bee colony, which is located in the immediate vicinity of the South Seayrthe (offered: Leptospermum scoparium), deserves the name Manuka Honey. Another name for the plant with the sonic name is New Zealand myrtle or Manuka. The plant grows exclusively in the New Zealand mountainous regions in the southeastern part of Down Under. “South Seemyrtenhonig” could possibly be sold even better, because the name seems infinitely promising. However, only ancient people know why the honey produced from the nectar of this plant is ultimately called Manuka Honey. Because from this epoch the precious Southeemyrthen or Manuka honey has made it to our present age.
The South Seayrthe grows in New Zealand in a variety of places. She feels particularly comfortable in mountainous regions. But it can also be found near forests, riversides and streams. The plant can reach a height of up to four meters and is extremely resistant and robust. Whether the nature of the soil is rather dry and nutrient-poor is one thing for the plant. It is only important to her that she is regularly supplied with a sufficient amount of water.
If one compares the consistency of Manuka honey with the honey from local areas, the special viscosity is immediately apparent. Here we speak of the so-called thixotropy, which means nothing more than the thicker consistency and this typical dark brown colouring of the honey. Researchers agree that this particular viscosity is caused by a special protein found only in Manuka honey and no other honey.
The main ingredients of Manuka honey are:
- different types of sugar
- Coffee acid
- Syringic acid
- Ferulaic acid
In addition to methylglyoxal or dihydroxyacetone, other substances are also present in Manuka honey. However, their proportion is extremely low, so that actual efficacy has not yet been fully demonstrated. What is very interesting in this respect, however, is the fact that the natural product contains an extraordinary number of trace elements such as iron and manganese. These are incredibly important in terms of the formation of enzyme and connective tissue as well as for blood formation. The relatively high proportion of amino acids – including leucine, arginine, glycine, alanine and prolin – has an extremely beneficial effect on muscles. In this way, the body is protected to a particular extent against acidification, which is not only relevant for competitive athletes.
To briefly return to the sugar contained in Manuka honey: Yes, you read correctly. As in any other honey, Manuka honey also contains sugar. This idea alone may have a rather deterrent effect on one or the other. It is perfectly understandable, because after all, sugar is known as a thickener, among other things – and it does not have a particularly beneficial effect on the health of your teeth. But now it’s coming! In this respect, too, Manuka honey is very different from normal honeys! While conventional honeys contain sugars that cause tooth decay, this is completely different in New Zealand’s “liquid gold”. Recent research has shown that human dentures can be protected against harmful toppings after consuming sugary manuka honey. In plain language, it says that even the sugar in Manuka honey is beneficial to health.
Manuka Honey: Why does methylglyoxal play such an important role?
Methylglyoxal (MGO) is contained in comparatively large amounts in Manuka honey. The intense antibiotic effect was recognized very early on. As recent studies prove, it is even possible to put an end to the dreaded hospital germ thanks to MGO. Given this considerable portfolio of services, it is not surprising that Manuka Honey continues to enjoy the greatest popularity among health-conscious connoisseurs. Methylglyoxal is a sugar degradation product that is formed by dehydration of the nectar still in the honeycomb. For this reason, scientists at the Technical University in Dresden conclude that this product is created only by the bees taking the nectar and transporting it to the hive afterwards. In the course of their research, the researchers also found that the methylglyoxal concentration in Manuka honey can be increased by storage alone. Scientists are even going one step further. In fact, they have established a specific measurement method that enables them to explicitly predict the MGO share with regard to the respective storage period. What can be inferred from this? That it may even be possible to artificially produce and breed methylglyoxal in the short or long term. This could be achieved by planting many Manuka plants and, in the course of this, forcing the production of the health-promoting Manuka honey.
Notable MGO values in Manuka honey
In the course of in-depth research, the Dresden TU also found that the antibacterial effect of MGO occurs mainly in Manuka honey. Corresponding studies also show that methylglyoxal also works primarily against the pathogens Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.
Methylglyoxal is not only present in all honeys, but also in coffee. And even in particularly large quantities. Nevertheless, recent research has shown that the MGO content in Manuka honey is by far the highest. Manuka honey – what is its effect?
Honey has been used since time immemorial as a home remedy for colds, inflammation in the throat and for the treatment of wounds. The anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effect of bee honey is based on hydrogen peroxide, which is contained in small amounts in any natural honey. Methylglyoxal occurs in the flowers of the Manuka bush and is also produced by biochemical processes (sugar degradation) in the stomach of bees during the conversion of nectar to honey. This makes the MGO content in Manuka honey so uniquely high. Unlike hydrogen peroxide, MGO is insensitive to light and heat influences. This means that while other honey loses its antibacterial effect relatively quickly, the effect of the MGO in Manuka honey is preserved for a long time.
Is the effect the same with every Manuka honey?
The effectiveness of Manuka honey depends on the MGO concentration. The higher the value, the better the effect of honey. Since real Manuka honey is a pure natural product, the MGO concentration varies considerably depending on the location of the bushes and the harvest time. For this reason, honeys with different MGO content are available on the market. The MGO concentration of honey is indicated on the labels, for example with MGO 100+ or MGO 400+. The figures indicate the MGO concentration in milligrams (mg) per kilogram of honey. Another common indication is the so-called UMF value. UMF stands for Unique Manuka Factor and is given as 5+ to about 25+. Both values can be converted into each other. By the way, the honey is considered a real Manuka honey only if it consists of at least 75% Manuka pollen.
Manuka honey – what do scientists say about its effect?
In recent years, various scientific studies have shown a wide range of manuka honey in various diseases. In the course of the studies, the antibacterial effect of honey was further supported. The antibacterial effect of honey in external and internal application is now out of the question. Honey has also been able to demonstrate its positive effect in the case of infections caused by fungi and in the fight against multi-resistant germs.
However, not in all areas for which Manuka honey is given a healing effect, this has so far been proven. An antiviral effect, i.e. an effect of honey in an infection caused by viruses, which has already been touted in some cases, has not yet been confirmed unequivocally. This includes virtually all colds caused by viruses. Diseases caused by viruses cannot be treated with antibiotics. In these cases, therefore, the effect of the MGO is ineffective. However, other ingredients of honey soothingly alleviate the symptoms of the disease and support the healing process. For the treatment of severe burns or for the treatment of skin damage caused by diabetes, the honey has turned out to be unsuitable and in some cases even contraindicated. Similarly, studies on the use of honey in the prevention and treatment of cancer have not yet been completed.
However, the effect of honey, which is still questionable in a few cases, is no reason to make a wide arc around this unique honey. In many diseases, New Zealand honey has proven to be a multi-talent in both external and internal use and has earned a regular place in every home pharmacy.
The effect of Manuka honey on external use
Honey has the best researched effect in the treatment of skin injuries. Abrasive and cut wounds, mild to moderate burn injuries and occasional ulcers can be well treated with the honey. Wound dressings with Manuka honey, relieve pain, promote healing and protect the affected areas of the skin from bacterial infestation. Good healing successes were also achieved in fungal diseases of the skin (mycoses), acne and chronic wounds. In addition, the honey relieves the itching after an insect bite and prevents inflammation. It is known that honey can shorten the time for wound healing by up to 25%.
