Origin and history of Oregano
Oregano as a spice is an integral part of Mediterranean cuisine. But few people know that oregano is an important medicinal herb and can quickly bring relief to a wide variety of ailments.
Oregano itself, whose botanical name is origanum vulgare, is native to the Mediterranean sea and belongs to the family of the lip-flowers. Oregano is also called wild marjoram, although it has nothing in common with the marjoram. The active ingredients in Majoran and Oregano differ greatly.
According to traditional scriptures, the ancient Greeks already knew how valuable Oregano is, and Hippocrates and Dioscurides swore on this herb as early as 400 BC. Both wrote scientific writings and wrote down the strong healing power of Oreganos. But after the healing power of the wild marjoram fell into oblivion and was only used as a spice, Oregano is making a real comeback in recent years. Even the pharmaceutical industry is very interested in this plant and is now using it for numerous preparations, which shows that oregano is a versatile active ingredient.
Manufacture of oregano oil
Oregano oil is produced using water vapour distillation. The leaves are crushed and come into a boiler, to which hot water vapor is then added. This allows the essential oils to detach from the plant. Through tubes everything is now fed into a boiler. The water vapor on the cold walls of the tube turns into water and essential oil. This is then separated from the water to create a pure oregano oil.
However, oregano oil is not exactly cheap. This is because about one tonne of plants is needed per litre of oregano oil. However, the valuable oregano oil can also be easily produced by itself. Although this is not quite as high dosed, it can still have a positive effect.
Manufacture of oregano oil in your own kitchen
Oregano oil can be produced quickly and easily by yourself. Although it is not as effective as essential oil, it can still be used to prevent various diseases. However, essential oil is recommended to relieve discomfort.
In the own production of oregano oil, flowers and leaves are added to a bottle, which is then filled with a high-quality base oil (olive oil). The flowers and leaves must be completely covered with the oil so that no mould forms. The bottle should then be stored in a dark and cool place for about four weeks and shaken well daily. This allows the important ingredients to connect with the oil. After these four weeks, the oil is excellently ready for food refinement or for external use.
